Artist Discussions: Beatrice Alemagna, Tomi Ungerer, and Suzy Lee

Three author/illustrators were particularly celebrated at this year's Bologna Children's Book Festival. One of them is Italian. One of them is Korean. And one of them is dead.

Stay Curious, Ask Lots of Questions, Don’t Trust Adults: Tomi Ungerer and His Legacy / Coloring Book

Today the team behind the Tomi Ungerer coloring book joins us to discuss the man's work, his legacy, and the best of his books.

Fuse 8 n’ Kate: The Three Robbers by Tomi Ungerer

Tomi Ungerer died just this past year on February 9th so it seemed logical to me that we should try to do one of his books on the show. This begs the inevitable question, which one should we do? I had so many to consider. I decided to go with the only one I ever saw adapted by Weston Woods.

Surprising Jolts of Children’s Literature

April 11, 2018 by Betsy Bird

It’s that time again! Time to take a gander at what’s happening in the world of books for grown-up types. Oh sure, half the time it’s quickie diet books and memoirs of Churchill (I can guarantee that if there’s a Churchill book out there, the patrons of my library will snap it up, lightning quick) […]

Video Sunday: Butterfly in the sky / I can go twice as high (thanks in large part to physics)…

November 5, 2017 by Betsy Bird

Happy news, neighborinos! Today I bring unto you a video from BookFest, a yearly celebration of children’s literature hosted (these days) by Bank Street College of Education. Kidlit TV recorded almost the entire thing live and then put it on air. This year I had the honor of moderating a panel discussion with funny folks […]

Fusenews: Rules of Summer in November

June 27, 2013 by Betsy Bird

As you read this I am winging my way to Chicago, IL.  Land of Great Lakes, windy winds, and hot dogs that carry unconscionable stigmas for logical edible combinations (ketchup ONLY works on hot dogs, people).  Blogging, if my schedule is to be believed, is due to be a bit spotty for the next few […]

Fusenews: Look for the Girl with the Caterpillar Tattoo and She’s Gone

August 10, 2012 by Betsy Bird

I apologize for the recent radio silence, folks.  There’s something goofy in the state of Fuse 8.  For one thing, I can’t seem to comment on my own posts.  Most peculiar.  I will assume that this is just a passing fancy of the blog and that all will be well and good from this day […]

Video Sunday: “It was just full of mouthwash”

July 10, 2011 by Betsy Bird

The 90-Second Newbery submissions keep coming in!!  Remember, there’s still lots of time to have your talented kids/students/neighborhood gamins submit their own shortened versions of Newbery classics.  James Kennedy and I will be presenting them at New York Public Library in the fall, but we’d love more titles like today’s musical take on that William […]

Fusenews: Tomie/Tomi, Tomi/Tomie

June 30, 2011 by Betsy Bird

Things that I love: Blogging. My baby girl.  Seattle.  Two of those three things will be coming together on September 16th and 17th.  That’s when the 5th (five already?) annual Kidlitcon will occur!  It’s looking like a remarkable line-up as well with special keynote speaker YA author Scott Westerfeld and great presentations, as per usual.  […]

Fusenews: “I’m not trading my beef jerky for your edamame.”

June 27, 2011 by Betsy Bird

This may have to qualify for this month’s Best Thing Ever. You know Jon Scieszka?  Great guy.  Has two kids as it happens.  Casey and Jake.  Good guys.  Adults.  Now along with Steven Weinberg (who wrote To Timbuktu with Casey) the trio has created Diary of a Manly Kid.  Pretty much what it sounds like […]
