Video Sunday: Butterfly in the sky / I can go twice as high (thanks in large part to physics)…
Happy news, neighborinos! Today I bring unto you a video from BookFest, a yearly celebration of children’s literature hosted (these days) by Bank Street College of Education. Kidlit TV recorded almost the entire thing live and then put it on air. This year I had the honor of moderating a panel discussion with funny folks Carmen Agra Deedy, Jon Scieszka, and Rita Williams-Garcia. Now this thing is pretty long so here are some of the highlights broken down for you:
10:11 – #NoWords – Picture Books for Children – Moderated by Stephen Savage with David Wiesner, Jerry Pinkney, and Barbara Lehman.
1:05:15 – It Makes Me Laugh: Humor in Children’s Literature – Moderated by a fancy lady in a black jacket.
2:11:30 – Leonard Marcus comes to discuss Golden Legacy: The Story of Golden Books
2:42:50 – Me! Talking about me stuff! In a me like way!
4:39:35 – The New Golden Age of Nonfiction for Children – Moderated by Carole Boston Weatherford with Tonya Bolden, Candace Fleming, Don Tate, and Eric Velasquez

For whatever reason we don’t appear to have Carmen Agra Deedy’s killer keynote attached to this video. It is a bit of a crime against nature to miss it, though, so in lieu of that I’m just going to tack on her TED talk from a year ago. It’ll have to do.
The minute Halloween ends, the holiday season appears to be upon us. Well, far be it from me to start hawking the wares of others, but I did stumble on this rather adorable little gift, and figured it would be a good gift for my daughter this year (she’s six and doesn’t read this blog, so I think I’m safe in saying this). If you have a bookish crafty kid of your own to find original gifts for, this one’s pretty darn good:
Next up, how does Travis Jonker at 100 Scope Notes find all those marvelous videos? Two on his site recently hit it out of the park, so I’m purloining them from him today. The first features Maurice Sendak, Barbara Cooney, and Robert McCloskey from back in 1964:
And from 1981, Tomi Ungerer talking about his own books. Fun Fact: I had a chance to meet Mr. Ungerer back in 2011 and had to miss the opportunity thanks in large part to the fact that I was instead giving birth at the time.
Don’t think I really have to explain this next one:
The fact that Mr. Tyson has not penned a children’s book yet is very odd to me. Just a matter of time, folks. Just a matter of time.
And for the final off-topic video, Halloween is over and I shouldn’t dwell on the past. But this werewolf costume, man. Just the best thing. It makes me happy to see it. Enjoy.
