Review of the Day: Undefeated by Kwame Alexander, ill. Kadir Nelson

Kwame Alexander’s words are grand. Kadir Nelson’s art soars. But when you put those two things together, and they work in tandem, they bring out the best in one another. Unrelenting, undeniable, unavoidable. Fail to read this book at your peril. I hope it is only the beginning.

Fusenews: Don’t Go Breaking My, Don’t Go Breaking My . . .

Happy Valentine’s Day!  It has been QUITE a while since I’ve done one of these Fusenews (Fusenewses? Fusenewsi? What’s the plural?)! Honestly, I’m not sure if they’re as pertinent anymore as they used to be. Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans By Kadir Nelson Balzer and Bray (an imprint of Harper Collins) $19.99 ISBN: 978-0-06-173074-0 Ages 9-12 On shelves now Humans tend to be a highly visual species. When folks tell you not to judge a book by its cover, that’s an optimistic sentiment rather than […]

Fusenews: Words, words, wonderful words

August 15, 2011 by Betsy Bird

Though I mentioned it yesterday, I was pleased as punch to discover the recent winners of the Society of Illustrator’s Original Art.  The Gold?  It went to a plucky (and very good) little nonfiction title by the name of Witches! The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem, both written and illustrated by Rosalyn Schanzer.  […]
