Fuse 8 n’ Kate: Ginger Bear by Mini Grey
“Crime and murder!”
Do you want unspeakable violence on the picture book page? Well, folks, Kate sure did. And thanks to the suggestion of listener Rachelle, and her daughter Sarah, I finally had a book that would give her just what she required. Is there blood? There is not, though honestly she got her fill of blood when we talked about King Stork (remember the heads on stakes?). Enjoy our discussion of what may well be the MOST disgusting sequence in a picture book of all time, as well as me failing to correctly pronounce “dragees” (stay tuned for the very rare extra after the credits). Be prepared to get some serious Stinky Cheese Man and Arnie the Donut vibes from this book.

Show Notes:
Gotta give it up for The Ginger Bun’s marketing manager. Not only does the name of the store appear on its front three different places, someone inside is handing out a card with the store’s name on front. This card comes up later (and, interestingly, is the sole time when the term “biscuit” is used in the American editions of this book).

Poop books? Vomit books? NONE of those hold a candle to this, a selection that may be the most disgusting sequence in a picture book of all time. And I feel strangely pleased that it was made by a woman.
Horace, for my part, looks like a British version of David Shannon’s David to me.
On the subject of this guide on how to brush your teeth we say, “This is written by a madwoman.”
“Some cookies just want to watch the world burn.” Note that they have fire and weapons and yet NONE of this helps them when Bongo the dog enters the room.
Mom’s morning robe and matching slippers are on fire, absolutely. The only problem is that from a distance, it does kinda sorta make it look like she has the plague.
