Fuse 8 n’ Kate: I Had Trouble Getting to Solla Sollew
What’s that? You’ve never heard of this particular Dr. Seuss book? Well, you’re definitely not alone. If one were to rank Seuss titles from best known to least, there is no doubt in my mind that Solla Sollew would be right there at the bottom. But is there any chance that this 1965 publication might have something to say about the baby boomer generation, Vietnam, escapism, and even stories like Pippin and Candide? This week our special guest is none other than my very own husband Matt Bird. You may be familiar with his podcast with author James Kennedy the Secrets of Story podcast OR his podcast with his brother Steve Bird the Marvel Reread Club OR from his books The Secrets of Story and The Secrets of Character. He’s unafraid to make a whole slew of claims about this book, so buckle up for a mighty strange ride. So basically, if you’ve ever wanted to hear me talking with my own spouse, now’s your chance. Come for that, and stay for David Small’s additional information in our letters section about how he came to find the perfect rooftop to draw for our book two weeks ago The Gardener.

Show Notes:
For the record, I am 90% certain that the animal I saw on my way home was this:
“How… is this… not a tattoo.” Our hero of this book decides to avoid trouble by keeping his eyes pointed in different directions. Why is this as disturbing as it is?

We’re fairly certain that this is the first that the camel has heard how long this journey is going to take. How else to explain this expression on its face?
When considering where to stay the night, sometimes you should let your common sense do the talking. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water this is not.
I love that Kate said that at this point our hero is clearly saying, “I’m gonna Mario this. Peace out.”
Okay, we give up. What precisely is going on here exactly?
Matt has read this book countless times, but this is the very first time he ever noticed that the doorman has six fingers. “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya…”

O, do link to some performance of the Seussical song, Solla Sollew. It’s so lovely–and it’s the gateway for so many readers’ finding their way back to the book.

Ah! Will do when I find the perfect version.

I throughly enjoyed this episode!
Glad Matt mentioned ‘Seussical’ the Musical as I was about to pause the podcast so I could enlighten all with a comment.
