Buy Me Stuff for a Good Cause

July 28, 2010 by Betsy Bird   4 comments

Yeah, I admit that today was a crazed press release day.  But what we lack in content, we make up for in sheer gall.

Now there is an organization out there, my friends, by the name of 826.  All around the country it offers free counseling and tutoring to kids.  The New York branch‘s mission is “dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.”  I think the drop-in tutoring is the most important, though.  They do that in conjunction with Brooklyn Public Library, and it’s the best.

Well now this little non-profit is having a fund raiser to get some money into their free tutoring coffers and you can help.  It’s called Dueling Bingos and here’s what they have to say for themselves:

On August 7th, 2010, starting at 7pm, join us at 826NYC (372 5th Ave, Brooklyn) for the most cut-throat, single elimination, down-and-dirty, going-to-get-ugly, no-holds-barred Bingo Tournament ever held!

Go head to head against other players, including Comedian John Oliver (The Daily Show), Actor Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Writer Eric Gilliland (That 70s Show) and Author Sarah Vowell (The Wordy Shipmates) to win fabulous prizes!

All proceeds benefit the free literacy programs of 826NYC.

All right.  Two options.

1: If you live in New York, why not come play a round?  It’s just $25, it goes to a good cause, and there’s always the faint chance that you’ll be able to hear John Oliver or Jack McBrayer (a.k.a. Kenneth the page) swear loudly.  You gonna pass that up?

2:  If you don’t live in New York you can sponsor a player (the money going to 826NYC again).  In this particular case the player involved is me.  I need your support, folks!  Starting off, I’ll get my own BINGO card, but if I want to get some help destroying the stars I’ll need more cards and more balls.  So!  If you are feeling inclined to open your wallets, help out a good cause, and potentially aid me in getting minor celebrities to cry, here’s what you do.

Go to this site.  Select me from the list of players.  Resist the urge to support Jon Scieszka, no matter how awesome that might be.  Spot me a tenner or a fiver or a what you wanter.  Batta boom, batta bing!

The catch to all this is that I will not win anything.  I am possibly the worst Bingo player in the history of the universe.  I understand that Bingo is a game of chance and that as long as you are paying attention you have a shot.  That is a nice myth, but I repeat: I’m lamentable.  Your support will do nothing but give good money to a worthy cause.  It will not help me win a prize.  However, in the event that a miracle happens and I do get something, if even one person supports me (or my husband, for that matter) I will take that prize and do something awesome with it in a video as a thank you.  I won’t keep it since it won’t really be mine.  Heck, I’ll even blog about the event.  This I swear to you.

Done. Good cause and also you provide a lot of fun here, so it is the least I could do. (Besides I could not resist the potential for another funny video.)

    Wait a minute…this pot needs a little stirring…

    Betsy=$50.00…Matt=$0.00…that hardly seems fair.
    Let’s remedy this…

    New totals…Betsy=$60.00…Matt=$65.00.
Yes–now the planets are back in alignment…LOL

Woah and wow! Jim, that is so fantastic of you! I was going to share my extra BINGO cards with him, but now Matt may be continuing to play while I drop out. Thank you!

with a prayer and a wing
Hope this helps to win this thing.
