What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is a burnt out fuse

February 19, 2010 by Betsy Bird   30 comments

Alas, I have crashed!  These Top 100 Children’s Novels posts are delightful and perhaps the most time-consuming project I’ve ever done.  Now with my sister newly arrived in town and Matt and I getting ready for an upcoming move next [checks watch] weekend (anyone wanna recommend a good Manhattan mover?) I will endeavor to bring you the best quality updates on the list.  However, for the next week or so, they may not be as daily as I’d like them to be.

Still, Tuesday we will resume as scheduled, never fear!  Until then . . .  zzzzzzzzz.

The half-way point is a fine spot for an intermission…
    Great work!

Absolutely the right thing to do. We are grateful for your efforts. Besides, I am keeping company with Gilly and Hugo.

  3. DaNae says

Oh for goodness sake, take a day, get some rest, chat with sis, hire someone else to pack your boxes. If for no other reason than to prove to the rest of us that you are indeed mortal.

  4. Abby says

Yes, Betsy, take a break! We appreciate all the hard work you’re putting into this.

  5. Kristin says

Thanks for all your hard work. I’ll look forward to the next batch.

  6. Amy says

I find it tremendously reassuring that you have a burn-out point, especially after reading about your 4-5 hours of blogging a night in Forbes. Your work is amazing.

  7. Emily says

    February 19, 2010 at 7:03 am

Ditto DaNae and Amy…I find it a little reassuring that even the super-human among us want a night off sometimes, and you certainly deserve it. Enjoy your weekend with your sister!

  8. MotherReader says

You more than deserve a break. With all the work you’ve been putting out, I’ve been wondering if you’ve managed to clone yourself. I am glad that you told us about your need for some time because the other day your post wasn’t up right away – and I was worried about you. Like actually worried. Take care of yourself.

  9. Sandy D. says

    February 19, 2010 at 7:36 am

You need to stop for a bit – not for yourself, but because the huge amount of work you’re putting out with these so far is making the rest of us feel like big lazy slugs in comparison.

Moishe’s Moving. The best and most reasonable. They’ll pack and unpack for you too-

  11. Miriam says

    February 19, 2010 at 8:13 am

No need to be a martyr! Enjoy your sister’s visit and a well-deserved sleep.

I don’t know about movers, but if you want bookish new yorkers to show up on your doorstep next weekend and carry boxes, just say the word!

  12. Fuse #8 says

    February 19, 2010 at 8:33 am

Aw, thanks guys. And Miriam I could never make my readers carry my boxes. I can see the headlines now. “Blogger Kills Faithful Readers Through Moving Ineptitude”.

  13. Connie says

    February 19, 2010 at 8:45 am

Definitely time for a break … and it just prolongs this wonderful journey you are taking us on. I’ve already started to worry about how empty my weekday mornings will be without the new “package” to open. Hurray! Now the delightful surprises will continue until spring is on the horizon.

  15. Genevieve says

Thank you for the incredible amount of detail you’ve been putting into this! Plus an upcoming move – no wonder you’re burnt out. See you after you’ve had a break. Enjoy your sister’s visit. (Time for my to re-read The Great Gilly Hopkins.)

    Betsy —
just read the Forbe’s piece about you on FB — My late Dad ( Milton Halpert 1910-2000) would have just loved you. He was a great champion of libraries and librarians . I tried to find you on LinkedIn… but glad I found you here –Put your mind at rest — try Sonya Weisshappel and her talented crew @ Seriatim — handles the whole process/coordinates & recommends movers/ sets up all when you get where you’re going — I know from personal experience ( and no publisher paid me for that review !!!) ( www dot Seriatim dot net)
Look forward to following you on your blog

    All the Best

Yes, you deserve a break today! Do I sound like a commercial? That way I can go back and re-read all your wonderful posts I skimmed over while at work… I don’t know how you do it all!

Wow about the Forbes article. You rock, Betsy Bird, and you make the children’s lit world a better place by being such a passionate part of it.

You definitely deserve a break! I was wondering how you could find so much time to blog! I haven’t even found enough time to read all your posts! Now I can catch up with 51-65.

    Betsy,

Quit your whining and get back to listing the titles! I still have books I am concerned about.

Ed, trying to provide some balance (and humor) to the completely true, accurate, and on the money comments you have received so far.

My goodness! The huge amount of work you have put into these posts would be remarkable under any circumstances, but that you are doing them while preparing for such a major move is truly astounding. At the very least you deserve a few days off! Thank you SO much for doing this.

After reading Eric’s summary, and browsing back over the books I voted for and the ones I’ve never heard of, I’m thinking that some day – and I’m not saying Betsy has to do it – I would love to see this same poll for YA books. 🙂

    Thank god!
Your superhuman capabilities were starting to alarm me, truth be told.

4 or 5 hours of blogging EVERY NIGHT?? Yikes!!!

  29. Matt says

    February 20, 2010 at 8:33 pm

    Take your time, Betsy!

LOVING the countdown – the quality and content is well worth the wait – you’re going much more quickly than I expected, actually!

West Side Movers. Moved us twice, packed most of our stuff and broke none, and gave us good advice about what we should let them do and what we should do ourselves.
