Kidlit Drink Night – Talking Caldecotts and Newberys

January 12, 2009 by Betsy Bird   5 comments

A show of hands.  Who is remaining in New York while our fellow compatriots high-tail it Denver to have oodles of ALA-centric fun?  I see.  Well due to the economic crunch, I think it’s safe to say that more than a few of us will be huddling down here in NYC.  That means that we should have a great big awesome party to celebrate the winners of the ALA Youth Media Awards (a.k.a. the Newbery, Caldecott, etc.).  We will watch the live feed in the morning, and then that evening we can dish about what won and what didn’t do so well.  Sound like a plan?  Here are the details.

When: Monday, January 26th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Gstaad.
How Do You Pronounce That?:  I think the "g" is silent, and then you add on a gutteral German sound at the back of your throat as you say "staad".
Fair Enough. So Where is it Again?: 43 West 26th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue.
Do We Have a Room?: We do.  And it’s called "The Cabin".  I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

The g isn’t silent. You say the G like the g in girl and just add on the staad. I’m guessing it has a ski lodge theme? Gstaad being known for skiing. I thought the opening of Charade, with Audrey Hepburn, was shot there, but evidently not. Still that is very Gstaad-ish.

Well, admittedly I was going entirely by the two voices I heard on the phone giving the name. I shall pronounce the “g” with loving fervor from here on in.

I hope to be there, and to leave my husband to the tender mercies of our two-month-old infant. I’ve been catching up with Fuse #8, and am gratified to see that David Frankland garnered the best cover for 2008. Yay David Frankland! Yay Fuse #8!

Yay, Marie Rutkoski! Hope to see you there. Thou art a trooper, woman. When I birth my own infant I know I’ll be forcing my own husband to feed me peeled grapes and dark chocolates for at least a couple months there.
