Today is Roald Dahl Day

September 13, 2008 by Betsy Bird   3 comments

Would I lie to you?  It even has its own website.  The good little pookies amongst you who have to work in the library on a Saturday may have prepared for this ahead of time.  If you haven’t, here are some last minute suggestions on how to properly celebrate the day.

1.  Gain inspiration from this picture collection of people celebrating the day back in 2007.

2.  Download the book quiz, games, recipes, word searches, and other free sheets o’ information here.

3.  Hand out peaches (um… September peaches, I guess).

4.  Create your own marvelous medicine.

5.  Systematically find spiders and set them free.

6.  Eat the largest chocolate cake you can find.

7.  Lick your wallpaper.

I was going to write more, but they seem to all involve eating or licking in some manner.  At any rate, have a great RDD!

    I’m reading Matilda.

On Friday I discovered that a young woman who works for Barnes&Noble here in Seattle met Roald Dahl several times as a young girl when her family lived in England. He came to her school to talk about his books. She remembers him wearing a tweed jacket w/ leather elbow patches and he made a point of shaking each child’s hand. She still has books he signed. Her fave and mine? Danny the Champion of the World.

I’m honored to share a birthday with both Roald Dahl and Carol Kendall (Gammage Cup et al), and was going to blog exuberantly about them both on Saturday, but discovered my connection was down (for the long count, as it turns out). So I have a whole year still to figure out some fabulous ways to compare and contrast the two authors. Hmm…
