Amending My Gross Generalizations
About a year ago or so I made a list of The Worst 14 Films Made from Children’s Books. Recently my mom sent my husband a great Roger Ebert book simply called Your Movie Sucks, and I could have learned a thing or two from that man. The guy’s got style when it comes to visual dreck. More than a year has passed since I wrote that list, and in that time I’ve mellowed. Which is to say, I’m beginning to turn around on the whole question of whether or not The Secret of NIMH was any good. Back in the day I felt you should exhibit faithfulness to the novel or nuthin’. Still, it’s hard to deny that it’s been years since I’ve seen the film and whole movie experience has stayed with me. Particularly the atmosphere NIMH managed to conjure up. Now The Onion’s AV Club has taken a second look at the movie and I can’t help but agree with their mixed review. Thanks to Dan for the link.

I loved The Secret of NIMH movie. I have to confess I’ve never read the book, I was a “Rescuers” reader as far as mice books went. The acting, the animation, and the artwork were beautiful and moving.
