31 Days, 31 Lists: 2020 Unconventional Children’s Books

For those of you keen on trying something a little different, this is the list for you. These are the books that gives you faith in publishing. Because if someone thinks that these can sell in American, things can't be all that bad.

31 Days, 31 Lists: 2019 Unconventional Children’s Books

How dull the world would be if all the children’s books fulfilled the same, rote expectations. If books never surprised or shocked then we’d find the world filled with dull books creating dull brains in dull children. Blah. Happily, we know this is not the case. There were a host of books out this year […]

31 Days, 31 Lists: Oddest Children’s Books of 2018

December 16, 2018 by Betsy Bird

What one person might consider "odd" could easily be another's cup of tea. It's important, then, to clarify that I don't see "odd" as a bad thing at all. It's healthy for a kid to see a book written for their age level that's outside the norm and dares to get a little bit freaky. Here then, are the 2018 titles that dared to be strange in some way. May they inspire others in the future!

You’re bound to see some overlap with this list, but I’ve a couple of my own particular favorites […]

Meet the Strangest Christmas Picture Book You’ll Ever Love

December 13, 2013 by Betsy Bird

In the past I’ve done posts about Weirdo Picture Books and others on Out-of-Print Crimes Against Humanity.  Today’s featured book could have fallen into both categories, were it not for the fact that there is justice in the universe.  Previously out of print, 1997’s A Small Miracle by Peter Collington is back by popular demand and […]

Fusenews: Et tu, Mike Inkpen?

July 24, 2013 by Betsy Bird

New Blog Alert: There’s a CCBC blog.  Did you know that?  I didn’t know that.  I am, of course, perfectly aware that only a good 15% of my readers instantly can call to mind what CCBC even stands for.  It’s the Cooperative Children’s Book Center and for years I’ve followed ccbc-net, their listserv.  I must […]
