From Readers to Leaders: Encouraging Ethical Behavior Through Children’s Books

The term “bibliotherapy” is bandied about in children’s literary circles, but to what extent can works for kids inform their ethics, morality, and behavior? Join authors Janet Wong and Stuart J. Murphy as they discuss how they see their own books informing the lives of their young readers.

Stuart J. Murphy (www.stuartjmurphy.com) is a children’s book author and visual learning specialist. His new 16-book series for Pre-K and Kindergarten children, Stuart J. Murphy’s I SEE I LEARN, focuses on social, emotional, health and safety, and cognitive skills. He is also the author of the award-winning MathStart series, which includes a total of 63 children’s books that present mathematical concepts in the context of stories. A graduate and current trustee of the Rhode Island School of Design, he is a frequent presenter at meetings of the International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and other professional organizations. He currently serves on the Advisory Council of the Arts in Education Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Janet S. Wong (www.janetwong.com) is the author of a wide variety of books for children, from chapter books (Me and Rolly Maloo) to picture books (The Dumpster Diver) to poetry e-books (Once Upon A Tiger). She has been honored with the Claremont Stone Center Recognition of Merit, the IRA Celebrate Literacy Award, and her appointment to the NCTE Commission on Literature. A frequent speaker at schools, libraries, and conferences, Wong has performed at the White House and has been featured on CNN, Fine Living’s Radical Sabbatical, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The Children’s Literary Salon is open to anyone with an interest in children’s literature.  No reservations are necessary to attend.  All Salons are free to the public.
