Prescient: Why the Netflix Version of A Series of Unfortunate Events is a Trump-Era Time Capsule

My family is currently watching the Netflix adaptation of the famous series. But does it have more to say to kids who lived under Trump than we suspect?

Fusenews: All the news that’s fit to fuse

Boy, howdy. I haven't done a good old-fashioned Fusenews in a long time. How do these work again? I just sort of throw up the recent children's literature news from a variety of sources with comments of some sort? Honestly, I used to do these pieces fairly regularly. That is, until I realized that PW Children's Bookshelf basically had this game in the bag. They know what they're doing over there. Still, there are always some interesting tidbits that catch my eye. On beyond the usual suspects:

Fusenews: Posthuman Pooh

Today on the Fusenews we begin with a mystery. Help me out here, gentle readers, I need your crowdsourced wisdom to solve a query for the ages. Every week I get my new copy of Publishers Weekly and settle down during my lunch break to read it cover to cover. It is one of my […]

The Series of “A Series of Unfortunate Events”: A Netflix Consideration

February 13, 2017 by Betsy Bird

I suppose that’s the thing with a streaming series these days.  Either you’re the kind of person who jumps on board immediately or you’re the type who waits it out, gives it some time to breathe (and garner reviews) and then you dip a toe or two in.  Though Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events […]

Video Sunday: Creepiness Abounds!

November 6, 2016 by Betsy Bird

Stranger Things, I credit you with this finally happening. Let’s think about doing a Girl With the Silver Eyes film next!  Thanks to Liz Burns for the link. Now when I heard that Nieman Marcus was offering 36 Caldecott Award winning picture books for $10,000 . . . *checks notes*  I’m sorry.  I typed the […]

Fusenews: The occasional library-centric “unruly pleasure”

May 23, 2016 by Betsy Bird

I’ve done it again.  Delayed my Fusenews too long and now this post is going to overflow with too much good stuff.  Forewarned is forearmed, as they say. Me stuff for the start. And in fact, there just so much Me Stuff today that I’m just going to cram it all into this little paragraph […]

Fusenews: Who are we to say?

March 22, 2016 by Betsy Bird

We’re diving right in today.  Check out this killer poster: Now if you’re one of the lucky ducks living in NYC, or will be there on the date of 4/16, you now have your marching orders.  This is an event held at Bank Street College of Education and in wracking my brains I can’t think […]

Video Sunday: One Video Short

August 16, 2015 by Betsy Bird

Been a while, hasn’t it?  Well, better late than never.  And you probably get a better level of quality videos if there’s a month’s gap, eh? Today we begin with the video of the week.  The Wall Street Journal released this article about Brian Selznick’s puppeteering work on his own book trailer.  For me, it’s […]

Fusenews: My Count Olaf’s more Vincent Price, but that’s neither here nor there

November 6, 2014 by Betsy Bird

Oh, thank the high heavens.  Good news, folks. The celebrities have arrived to show us how to write books with darker themes. Thank goodness they’re here!  Until now the field of children’s literature was just an unending vista of sunshine and daisies. But thanks to the combined efforts of Evangeline Lilly (“I look around me […]
