| 31 Days 31 Lists, Best Books, Best Books of 2021, Booklists
Today, I'm giving all my love to those quirky sci-fi (yes, I know science fiction fans hate that term) titles of 2021, both in picture book and older reader form. There weren't a ton, but what there was was magic.
For the kid that likes their science fiction dark with marvelous villains and a strong core message about individuality, storytelling, and hope, I can’t think of a better book to hand over. A dystopia you’ll be happy to dive into deeply.
Today I'm breaking down the Science Fiction titles of 2020 into Picture Books, Early Chapter Books, Middle Grade Fiction, and Comics. I wouldn't call this a definitive list of any kind, but I truly enjoyed each and every last one of these titles.

Science Fiction, man. It's one of my favorite genres for kids, but like Mysteries it can be hard to find a whole slew of them in a given year. To combat that problem, for today's list I'm pulling equally from the comics as I am the middle grade fiction.
“I am Fly. Maximillian Fly. I am a good creature. I am not bad, as some will tell you.” Considering that Maximillian is a human/cockroach hybrid of sorts, this is not particularly surprising news. Meet the dystopian/Steampunk/action adventure novel that's like nothing you've ever read before.

A wise bookseller friend of mine once said (and I’m paraphrasing here because she bloody tweets too often to locate the precise words), “If you work in a bookstore you are […]
One Trick Pony By Nathan Hale Amulet Books (an imprint of Abrams) $14.95 ISBN: 978-1-4197-2128-1 Ages 9-12 On shelves March 14th Let us say, for the sake of argument, that you are a wonderfully successful author/artist of a New York Times bestselling graphic novel series about historical events. Hazardous historical events. Let us say that […]
Morning, poppins! Yesterday, for the first time in a long while, I submitted a Video Sunday for your approval. Trouble is, I may have failed to mention one of the most fascinating videos out there with a tie-in to books for kids, so I’d like to rectify the situation today. The title of the article […]
The Wild Robot By Peter Brown Little, Brown & Company $16.99 ISBN: 978-0-316-38199-4 Ages 9-12 On shelves now There are far fewer robot middle grade books out there than you might expect. This is probably because, as a general rule, robots fall into the Data from Star Trek trap. Their sole purpose in any narrative […]
