Cover Reveal: Luck Charms the Prince by Lee Wind, ill. James Fenner

September 19, 2026 by Betsy Bird   Leave a Comment

I don’t think I’m saying anything particularly new or shocking when I point out that LGBTQIA+ content produced by children’s book publishers has appeared less and less often in the last two to three years. It’s gotten to the point where finding queer content is getting embarrassingly sparse. That’s why I’m so grateful when folks like Lee Wind ask me to do their cover reveals. Particularly when the book isn’t slated to be released for another EIGHT MONTHS!

In May of 2027, the relatively new publisher Picnic Heist will publish Luck Charms the Prince, written by Lee Wind and illustrated by James Fenner. The description of this original fairy tale is, “a Prince who doesn’t believe in storybook things like Luck, Wishes, or Magic meets a Good Luck Farmer who changes everything he thinks is possible—including his own Happily Ever After.”

Lee has this to say about it:

“I’m so excited to share with you and your readers the cover reveal of Luck Charms the Prince: A Fairy Tale, a picture book written by me, illustrated by James Fenner, and coming out (yes, pun intended) on May 25, 2027 from Picnic Heist, distributed by PGW.

As much as I love fairy tales and all their retellings in picture books, they are exhaustingly hetero—which leaves out so many lives and loves, including mine. I’m Gay, and have always had to imagine what was possible for my life between the lines of the classic fairy tales with their guy-and-gal romances.

With Luck Charms the Prince, I’m expanding the genre to include Queer love, and maybe heal my own inner child at the same time. In this new fairy tale, a Prince who doesn’t believe in storybook things like Luck, Wishes, or Magic meets a Good Luck Farmer who changes everything the Prince thinks is possible… including their very own, and very Gay, Happily Ever After.

I hope this rainbow-hued invitation to the realms of Once Upon a Time lets every reader know that storybook things like Luck, Wishes, Magic, and Happily Every Afters… belong to them, too.”

I am pleased as punch now to show off this cover:

Thanks to Lee for sharing this thoughts and his reveal here today! Luck Charms the Prince is Out May 25, 2027 so look for it then!
