Fuse 8 n’ Kate: What Was I Scared Of? by Dr. Seuss

October 20, 2025 by Betsy Bird   Leave a Comment

Anyone who has ever picked up a copy of The Sneetches for their children has probably discovered that The Sneetches does not stand alone. Indeed, it appears in a collection called The Sneetches and Other Stories. Now we’ve never done The Sneetches on our podcast. That would be an episode for another day. Today, we look at the far lesser-known (possibly for good reason) title What Was I Scared Of? Previously published under the title Pale Green Pants (and I think we can all agree that this title change was a move in the right direction) it follows a pair of disembodied pants straight out of the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Today, Kate I consider it as a possible Halloween contender and, in the course of things, discuss the 1977 animated Halloween television special Halloween is Grinch Night, the difficulty of saying the term “anapestic tetrameter” out loud, why the true star of this book should be named “Torselus Todd”, and (I won’t lie) we may use the term “badonkadonk” more than once.

Listen to the whole show here on Soundcloud or download it through iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Play, PlayerFM, Audible, Amazon Music, or your preferred method of podcast selection.

Source Notes:

Wikipedia informs us that Halloween is Grinch Night was a prequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas (so… I guess he didn’t learn his lesson from the Halloween experience?). It was narrated by Hans Conried (who had starred in the sole live action movie by Geisel, The 10,000 Fingers of Dr. T) and was “with Thurl Ravenscroft singing as he did in the original special. The songs and score were written by Sesame Street composer Joe Raposo.” Dang.

What are these creatures called? When we did I Had Trouble Getting to Solla Sallew, it starred the same little furry kind of guy. Do these guys have a name? Curious.

It DOES look like day-for-night in a film, right? I’d say that P.D. Eastman did it better in Sam and the Firefly.

“It’s the juiciest of butts that won’t even touch the seat.” I mean, Kate ain’t wrong. There’s a lot of mad ass junk in that trunk.

I do like how this image…

Reminded me of this TikTok video:

With peace and love this was genuinely the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. To be fair to the people on the boat we walked over to where they launched and they are given zero instructions. The guy who sends them off is wearing AirPods lol #newyorkcity #rowboat #centralpark #freethingstodoinnyc

Should anyone ask you, “Hey. Is there a children’s picture book where someone grabs someone else’s butt?” now you have your answer. It is, if it helps, accidental. Still…
