Mocks Amuck
Each year I like to keep track of all the Mock Caldecotts, Mock Newberys, Mock Siberts, etc. that I can find. It’s not easy. At this point in time it’s not as if ALA or SLJ has created a centralized site where folks can plug in their Mock results for all the world to see (*bats eyelashes in general direction of ALA and SLJ*).
In lieu of that, I’ve compiled as many Mocks as I can find. This year’s findings were a bit hampered by a snowstorm that caused many a Mock Newbery on the East Coast to be cancelled.

Our highly irregular Mock Caldecott at Frank Sarris Public Library in Canonsburg PA (in case somehow we hit it) took place on Tuesday, but only one family showed up for it. The baby couldn’t vote, and the three of us left– when you threw in my vote– had no consensus whatsoever when we took our top three votes. So we expanded to top five, voted again, and narrowed the contenders to four, which we then carried around the library asking everyone else we ran into to pick their two favorites of the four.
This made Nelson’s Baby Bear our clear winner, as nearly everyone we asked picked it. Tying for Honors were Viva Frida (my personal favorite) and Sparky! For the record, the fourth finalist was Gaston, but it only got one vote in the around-the-library round, so fell by the wayside.
Elizabeth Bird says
I sort of love the process of it. Particularly the line “The baby couldn’t vote” which makes it clear that the baby had distinct opinions on the matter but wasn’t able to vocalize them properly. Well played, baby.
I’ll add all Mocks mentioned here to the final list.

Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science had a Mock Newbery class and awarded Revolution the gold sticker. Honors went to The Art of Secrets and Bad Bye, Good Bye. Read the press release here: http://butlerspantry.org/2014/12/08/mock-newbery-results/
There was also a group that awarded a CaldeNott to Fox’s Garden. Honors went to Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes, At the Same Moment Around the World, and Rules of Summer. The press release for that is here: http://butlerspantry.org/2015/01/16/caldenott-results/

Here are the Mock results of my dreams:
Caldecott: Three Bears in a Boat
Newbery: A Snicker of Magic

I have to admit, I’ve been surprised by how few lists mention THREE BEARS IN A BOAT, and I think it’s a beautiful book. I read it to my three-year old neighbor, who at once said, “Read it again.” And I read it to several groups of third graders, who actually GASPED at the beauty of the pictures. A book of such loveliness, which can hold such a wide age range, should not be so easily discounted.
Elizabeth Bird says
Were it not for the fact that I know you are not me, I would swear that I had written this comment myself. I too have been surprised that it hasn’t come up more often.
Mary Z says
Our school Mock Caldecott had separate voting for each class (7 total this year), so each class had different winners and honors. However, every single class named PRESIDENT TAFT IS STUCK IN THE BATH as either the winner or honor book, so I’m calling this the clear winner for our school.
The students said they chose this one because of the bright colors and the details. They love the movement in the pictures (particularly when Taft is flying through the air). It doesn’t hurt that Taft is both very large and very naked.
Elizabeth Bird says
What’s your school’s name? I’ll count it.
Amy Miele says
We just finished voting for our Mock Caldecott today at South Valley School in Moorestown, NJ. We also vote separately in each class and then I total all of the votes.
Our winner was The Adventures of Beekle: the Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat.
Our honor books were Sam and Dave Dig a Hold by Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen, and The Farmer and the Clown by Marla Frazee. The winner was separated from the honors by about only 7 votes, and each of the honor books were 2 votes apart.
Amy Miele says
oops—-meant of course to say Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen…so excited about the results that I messed up my typing.
Jane Breen says
Mocks Amuck! Love it! Oh how I wish we hosted a Mock Caldecott in my little CT library. But I know I would have been terribly bossy, intimidating and overbearing! Because I adore Three Bears in a Boat. I continually place it in the hands of my patrons and pronouce..”this is the book that should win the Caldecott!” Of course last year I confidently pranced around with Mr Tiger goes Wild! In 27 years I have never predicted the winner – but hey – I know what I like! And my patrons want to hear, or maybe it’s just that I corner them and tell them!
Thanks for putting this together each year. I’ll be with you on Monday morning. ~ jane

The Mock Caldecott voting done at Kinderhook Memorial Library found Draw by Raul Colon receibing the most votes (or the most first place votes). Not sure that there was truly a consensus though.
Even in Australia says
A late entry but our school voted for Draw! as the favorite, with Flashlight and The Iridescence of Birds in second and third place, out of a limited selection of 10 books. And NONE of those were recognized. I am halfway through The Crossover and loving it, possibly more than Brown Girl Dreaming, so I’m pretty happy on that front. My personal favorite Josephine got recognized for a Sibert.
