S.E. Hinton Wrote Bonanza Fan Fiction . . .

May 8, 2012 by Betsy Bird   4 comments

. . . . and other true stories of my adventures yesterday.

Whew!  It’s been a whirlwind couple of days here in the home of the Bird.  Yesterday I had the honor of having a lunch with many of my fellow librarians alongside the iconic S.E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders.  The book is known by some as the first legitimate YA novel and by others as the only successful example of an honestly good teen writer coming to prominence.  This was also maybe one of the best lunches I have ever had or will ever have, partly because she’s a hoot (I’ll tell you the How S.E. Hinton Made Tom Cruise Throw Up story one of these days, I promise) and partly because it was at the Gramercy Tavern where the waitstaff serves you your food with synchronized motions.  Then, later that day, I attended the CBC Gala where Ms. Hinton was presenting an award . . . but more on that later (which is to say, when the photos and videos become available).

Now, because it is late and the silk dress that I am in has decided to cut off all circulation to my right arm (this is because I’m typing while lying on my side, but I refuse to move out of principal at this point), I shall simply direct you to a lovely Studio 360 piece that I was interviewed for months ago when I was on maternity leave.  It’s called American Icons: The Outsiders, it played this past Sunday and has a lot of fun facts about the book and movie that you may not have necessarily known.  I’d like to thank Lu Olkowski for taking the time to come on out to my apartment to conduct my portion of the interview.  She had to contend with a home in the early throes of a baby.  Couldn’t have been pleasant but she was a true class act all around.  Kudos, madam.  Kudos.

Ah! You ARE very very busy! And that’s besides being the Mom of a toddler who must be very active. What a fun way to be busy!

Oh my. I read THE OUTSIDERS when I was at college — which would have made it about 1971. (That number’s a typo, right? I’m sure it must be a typo…..) Does that qualify me to say “I knew her when,” or at least “I read her when”? I still remember the sense of startled discovery (and intense reading pleasure) that I got when I pulled it off the shelf and became immersed in it.

I love when authors admit to writing fanfic! From a few years back, a link to an earlier interview with Hinton about fanfic and her vampire/ possible Dark Shadows inspired book: http://yzocaet.blogspot.com/2009/04/se-hinton-fanfiction.html
