This Saturday at NYPL: The 90-Second Newbery Festival

November 3, 2011 by Betsy Bird   3 comments

I am pleased to announce the very first annual showing of the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival on Saturday, November 5th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Come join author James Kennedy (The Order of Odd Fish) as he presents short films by students all around The United States.  In between sets James will be joined by honest-to-gosh Newbery Award winner Rebecca Stead (When You Reach Me), former National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature Jon Scieszka, Ayun Halliday will be performing, as well as the kids of Writopia Labs who will create live (and very short) versions of various Newbery Award winning books.

This event will be held in the main branch of New York Public Library (The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building located at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street) in the South Court Auditorium.

Curious about the films?  Check out this recent entry called “The Real Housewives of Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!”

For more information on the festival go to http://www.90secondnewbery.com. Future screenings will take place in Chicago on 11/16 and at the Multnomah County Library System on 3/3/12.

[Note: Folks who wonder why this event does not show up on the NYPL calenders should be informed that while the library has been kind enough to lend out their auditorium for this festival, they are not officially sponsoring it or connected to it in any way.  FYI.]

I’m excited for this! I blogged extensively on the 90 Second Newbery Contest hoping that it will get kids excited to read Newbery books, even reluctant readers. Will you post some of the winning videos for those of us who can’t make it to NYC?

James is putting them all up on his blog. He’ll post them once the festivals are done, I believe. I’ll blog about it when that happens! Most are on his blog already too.

That’s true, Betsy. I’m posting them as fast as I can at http://www.jameskennedy.com. Sometime after the Chicago screening on 11/16 I will convert http://www.90secondnewbery.com from just a page of rules to a clearinghouse of all the videos. But one thing at a time! I’m just one man, PragmaticMom! Criminey, I need an intern.
