Video Sunday: Feel Good, Inc.

October 23, 2011 by Betsy Bird   4 comments

Halloween is on the horizon so Monica Edinger (of Educating Alice n’ such) whipped together a handy dandy little list of recommended spooky 2011 books for the season.  These videos take a bloody long time to make but dude, they are so worth it in the end.

Now I should remind you that soon soon soon the 90-Second Newbery Festival will be occurring at the main branch of NYPL.  On November 5th from 3-5, to be precise (details here).  We’ll have famous folks like Jon Scieszk and Rebecca Stead on hand as well as actors performing 90-Second versions of various Newbery winners.  James has received whole cartloads of submissions by this point.  One that I was particularly fond of?  This silent film version of Crispin: The Cross of Lead.  Dee-lightful!

Speaking of the 90-Second Newbery, one of the submissions was also submitted to the SLJ Trailee Awards.  And the final videos are up and ready for your vote!  Head on over to watch and pick your own favorite.  I just did so myself.  Voting ends December 16th!

Next up, the EW parody of what happened with Lauren Myracle and The National Book Award this week.

Now if your library is anything like my own, you’ve got kids trailing in every other day asking for I Spy books.  Author Walter Wick is one of those interesting authors you see the books of all the time, but who doesn’t exactly hog the public spotlight.  Truth told, I couldn’t have told you what the man looked like . . . until NOW!  How cool is the man’s workspace?  Lose a toddler in there and they might never emerge willingly again.

Thanks to John Mason for the link.

I include this next one in memory of Steven Kroll.  He was a good man and a nice guy.  I remember when he was lobbying TOON Books to have this old picture book of his turned into a new TOON edition. He swayed them but died before it hit bookstore shelves.  Here then is its book trailer in his memory:

Suuuuuure would be nice if some publisher here in the States were to bring this reissue of one of his old titles to our side of the pond.  Yup yup yup.

Thanks to Playing By the Book (who called this “Philip Pullman meets Laurel and Hardy”) for the link.

And finally, I’ve noticed that the new performing skill out there today is an ability to play different instruments and to loop them together.  With that in mind, here is a video that does precisely that.

WOW! The final video was an amazing display of layering — and dexterity! Thank you for another wonderfully varied Video Sunday! 😀

The EW/Lauren Myracle video was great (I’m at work and need to get the library ready for business, so I can’t watch them all yet).

Is Baby Bird dressing up for Halloween?

I had considered dressing her all in red to make her an Angry Bird. Then I would dress as a green pig. The danger with such an outfit is, of course, that if you’re going to be literal about it then folks would have to launch her through the air at me. Then I remembered that she was a baby, she doesn’t have any baby friends, and we haven’t anywhere to show her off. Maybe next year, eh?

Ah, but you could post pictures on your blog to delight your readers! (You could even do a photo edit to simulate throwing her through the air with the statement that no baby was actually thrown in the production of this image.)
