What a fabulous mix of styles, too! Clearly, you and the other judges had your work cut out for you, assessing the comparative strengths of strong season of entrants to winnow it down to this stellar group of winners. 😀

Hey, Betsy, congrats! Love these choices, and I’m dying to know the criteria for choosing them. Does the text matter at all or is it ONLY about the quality of illustration?

Now Susan, I don’t yet know who is replacing Julie but you can bet I’ll let y’all know the minute I hear anything. Personally, I’m going to miss her. She was a good editor to me.

And Marjorie, it’s funny but the criteria appears to be contingent upon the judges in a given year. I’ve hear rumor (just a rumor mind) that some 20-odd years ago an illustrator said that each of the three judges picked their top three and then a single book they could all agree on. Yikes! This year our choices were all mutual and I think we each critiqued the books from different points of view. I looked at them with my librarian glasses on. Robert is an artist himself and took that into account. And David’s background is in design so that expertise was worked in as well. Combine our three points of view and voila! Instant list.
