Bringing the Funny . . . Twice!

September 9, 2010 by Betsy Bird   3 comments

Have plans this weekend?  That’s a pity.  I sure wish you could drop those plans because I have TWO (count ’em) TWO panels that I’m moderating on Saturday and Sunday and they both have the same topic: Funny Books.

How did this happen?  I have no idea, but I do find it amusing how some things shake out.  If you’re interested, here’s the info on both events:

Saturday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m.

Children’s Literary Salon – Bringing the Funny

Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Children’s Center at 42nd Street (Map and directions)
Ground Floor, Room 84

Fully accessible to wheelchairs

Genius is never fully appreciated in its time. Humor, however, is quite another matter entirely. Join YA author Libba Bray of the Printz Award winning novel Going Bovine and picture book author (and Simpsons writer) Mike Reiss in conversation as they discuss not just the difficulties in bringing humor to the printed page, but the problems funny books face in the market and the critical world.

This event will be held in the Berger Forum (Room 227)

The Children’s Literary Salon is a monthly gathering of adults who are fans of children’s literature.   Professionals, librarians, authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, teachers, and anyone else interested in the field are welcome to attend our meetings.   The Literary Salon provides free Advanced Readers galleys, a rotating series of talks with professionals in the field, and great conversation.   This program is for adults only.

And then the next day . . . .

Sunday, September 12th at 10:00 a.m. (oog!)

You’ve Got to Be Kidding

Former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Jon Scieszka (Spaceheadz), National Book Award finalist E. Lockhart (The Treasure Map of Boys), and Mac Barnett (The Brixton Brothers) take on the absurdity of life in books and writing, and talk about their ways of making us laugh, including hamster space aliens and panicky smart alecks. Moderated by Betsy Bird.

Those both sound great! Can you do a program like that out here in the LA area? Or will either of them be podcast? It would be great to be able to watch them remotely!

Boy, I wish I could. There was some thought of recording my Lit Salons, but nothing really came of it. But maybe the Brooklyn Festival will do something snazzy. Fingers crossed. Failing that, fly me to LA and I will do whatever you want. I’m an easy soul.

For a moment there I actually considered bombing up the NJ Turnpike for your Sunday morning panel. Frankie Landau-Banks meets Billy Twitters and the Time Warp Trio? Now THAT sounds like trouble!

But I’d have a hell of a time getting back down to Baltimore to man the reference desk at 1pm. Please ask Scieszka to have someone start work on an actual time-warp machine. I’m sure, as Former Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, he has some pull at NASA. Thanks!
