Press Release Fun: A Leonard Marcus walking tour of Margaret Wise Brown
Here’s what we know.
1. The weather is nice.
2. Leonard Marcus is pretty much the greatest living children’s literary scholar to put pen to paper when it comes ot the life of celebrated author Margaret Wise Brown.
3. Margaret Wise Brown lived in New York City.
Put it all together and you get to have Mr. Marcus himself leading you through New York City to see the woman’s haunts. How cool is that? And it’s sort of around BEA time, so some of you out-of-towners will have a chance to go! To wit:
Celebrate Margaret Wise Brown’s 100th birthday, on Sunday, May 23rd, by taking a fascinating walking tour of Brown’s Greenwich Village, led by Brown biographer/guru Leonard Marcus. Find out where the glamorous author of GOODNIGHT MOON lived, wrote, taught 2nd-graders, had cocktails with Ursula Nordstrom and H.A. Rey, and just possibly hatched plans for THE GOLDEN EGG BOOK and Great Green Room! That sounds terrific! If anyone has the chance to hear Leonard Marcus speak, don’t miss it! He spoke about his research on Golden Books at the Virginia Library Association’s conference. He also attended the Jefferson Cup luncheon, and he was seated at my table! The people who attend the Jefferson Cup luncheon are mostly youth services librarians, and he was very patient and willing to discuss Golden Books, Margaret Wise Brown, and the recently released (then) Where the Wild Things Are movie. A very nice man in addition to being a great scholar of children’s literature.
Curse you, non-refundable plane tickets! I’ll be two days late and a million dollars short. Nuts.
