Boston Bound

January 14, 2010 by Betsy Bird   8 comments

Well folks, I would write you an intricate highly convoluted blog post today, but as you read this I am probably hopping on a bus (a Bolt Bus, no less) bound for beautiful Boston, MA.  That’s the good news.  The bad news is that last night’s fine and fancy Kidlit Drink Night was so successful that it left me with zero to zip blogging energy.  Boo.  In any case, I promise you lengthy posts and updates on the conference as it happens, m’dears.  At the very least you’ll be getting one good Video blog post out of it.

But don’t Bolt buses have internet access? Ha! Just kidding. Safe travels and see you at ALA.

As our on the sport reporter, I have a question and a request, once you get a connection again:

Do you know if the webcast will be able to be viewed at a later date and time? I of course will be watching it live. But as ALSC, in its misguided wisdom, has planned to do the big reveal on a non-school day, my Mock Newbery students, will be detained from finding out the results live, unless they are sneaky and watch it from home. Anyway we have a big event planned for Wednesday before school, where-in they view the actual award, if at all possible, before their own choice is made known. Donuts will be involved.

The request is: if we are unable to view the event after the fact, and if you are planning on documenting via video, will you have the proceeds up and running by 8:00 MST, Wednesday Morning? Can you do that for us? Will you be our salvation? If not I will need to work out an interpretive dance to replay the ceremony.

I was the same way after the Drink Night (though I bailed around 8:30, so I probably have less of an excuse!). Went home, picked up pizza for dinner, and then pretty much crashed without even checking my e-mail (this never happens).

Hm. All right, DaNae. You have a point. Insofar as I can tell ALA never replays or puts the videos of the announcements online for public consumption after the fact. Anyone who wishes to correct me on this, please do. And I do have a handy dandy little camera here.

*sigh* How can I say no to someone who is offering her students donuts?

All right. I promise you (I shudder to write that knowing the problems of technology, but I’m gonna say it just the same) that I will have the video of the announcements up before Wednesday morning. And since I’m writing this from my BoltBus (which not only has WiFi but also a place to plug in my laptop) I may even be able to do it on the road when I leave that day.

Mind you, the quality of my video will be lamentable since I’ll be simultaneously recording and tweeting. But I’ll do what I can.

You will certainly be deserving an Action Figure if you meet this Challenge! Nancy Pearl who?

The lackadaisical approach taken by the ALA in regards to the posting (or lack thereof) of videos of the Award Announcements as well as the later Banquet Acceptance Speeches on their ALA website really frosts me.

It just so happens that the Award Announcements for the last two years are posted on Google Videos.
Go to Google Videos…WWW dot VIDEO dot GOOGLE dot COM.

    Then do a Search on…”ALA Awards 2008″…and…”ALA Awards 2009″.
Both videos bubble up close to, or at the top.

I don’t know who posted these videos originally (ALA?), but I guess there’s no guarantee that this year’s video will be similarly posted…or when.
