Press Release Fun: Rabbit Hill Festival

September 22, 2009 by Betsy Bird   5 comments

Hey! Hey hey. If I say to you the words "Rabbit Hill Festival" what comes to mind?  Rabbits.  Hills.  Does a little book called Rabbit Hill also come to mind?  Won a Newbery? Was written by Robert Lawson? Well it should because, friends, there is in Westport, Connecticut a little festival, "named to honor Robert Lawson, the only author/illustrator to win both the Caldecott and Newbery Medals for excellence in children’s illustration and literature." I did not know that.

Each year the good folks of the Westport Library system come up with a theme related to Mr. Lawson’s work, and this year that theme is "focusing on writers of creative biography and historical events for students in middle school."  So what’s their line-up?  Only Susan Campbell Bartoletti, Tonya Bolden, Candace Fleming, Dennis Fradin, Judith Fradin, and Gary D. Schmidt.  Now THAT’s what I call a line-up.

Rabbit Hill is just about the only animal story that I have liked. Just about.

I’ve been to the Rabbit Hill Festival for the last 4 years. It’s an excellent children’s literature festival and they always have great authors/illustrators. And for those of you on a budget, they allow you to name your own registration price. Sign up early!

This is an excellent festival! I’ve been several times. Be sure to sign up for the Weston Woods tour. Fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the place.

Come on out to Westport, Betsy!

I would, darlin’, but life is a bit kooky at the moment. I’ll be there in spirit, certainly.
