Press Release Fun: New Guys Read Website

September 21, 2009 by Betsy Bird   11 comments

Psst!  Wanna see something cool?  You know how Jon Scieszka (our National Ambassador) is all about getting boys to read more?  And how he used to have this website for it called Guys Read which was . . . okay, can I level with you here?  It wasn’t that hot.  All good intentions, but creaky.  Snorefest, basically what I’m saying.  Only here’s the thing… recently Jon and his crew decided to revamp the whole kerschmozzle.  I’m talking new look, new blog, cool recommendations, and funny funny funny.

So now they’re introducing the brand new and improved www.guysread.com.  Design King Sam Potts put it together and it looks fabulous.  I’m particularly fond of the book categories.  My favorite: Repairing shoes but are only written in Spanish and another one called At least one explosion (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made that particular list).

And don’t listen to Kanye or anything.  This site has it all.  Go.  Enjoy.  Get your boys to see it.

That’s one good looking site! I like it!

It was too static before – great idea but nothing going on. So happy to see this and I hope it stays active!

That is so much better! I hope they really use the blog to become more dynamic!

It is one fine site, now. Those category headings will grab LOTS of attention. I’m betting that Repairing shoes but are only written in Spanish will be the most-clicked link.

Great site. Wish that it had real contact info. because I saw a mistake and there isn’t anywhere to send a correction.

Eh, send it to me. I know someone who could pass on corrections, possibly.

Thanks for the debut info; I remember Jon mentioning this at Day of Dialogue and I have been trying to check the site but had not seen that it has gone live. Great news!

Hooo-Ray, it is about time. And where can I get my own little guy figure to hide about my stacks. It could pop out at my male student in unexpected places tempting them to try something new. It would never be found, however, with the Laura Ingall Wilder books.

Nice redo on the site! A suggestion (which I will direct to the site), I don’t see Chris Gall or any of his books listed. Dinotrux, There’s Nothing to do on Mars and Dear Fish. All outstanding books for boys.

Love it. I was a fan of the old Guys Read just for its list of boys’ book suggestions but the new site is cool. I’m considering investing in a cap. Or maybe that’s a bit weird.

It’s so important to draw attention to reading, and attract reluctant readers to it,especially boys. In fact, I’ve recently completed a feature magazine article on this subject that came out in October, “Help for Struggling, Reluctant Readers.”

I grew up as a reluctant reader, in spite of the fact that my father published over 70 books. Now I write action-adventures & mysteries, especially for tween boys, that avid boy readers and girls enjoy just as much.

My blog, Books for Boys booksandboys.blogspot.com is dedicated to drawing attention to the importance of reading.

    Keep up your good work.
