Fusenews: Rhymes with “Sauce ’em”

September 10, 2009 by Betsy Bird   10 comments

I couldn’t describe this any better than my boss did when he sent me the link in the first place: "This links to a terrific 30 minute BBC radio program by Michael Rosen on Winnie in Russia! I especially love the justifications for leaving Christopher Robin out of the narrative…."  Thanks to John Peters for the link.

Speaking of Monsieur Rosen, that Roald Dahl Funny Prize he established far and away over the seas has announced its second batch of shortlisted winners.  Amongst them I have only read The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams in the older fiction category and The Pencil by Allan Ahlberg in the younger.  Looking forward to seeing more.  Thanks to @mitaliperkins for the link.

  • Political cartoonists are as unto gods in my home.  I’ve a signed Mark Alan Stamaty print that the saint of the man made for my husband once (Washingtoons deserves a reprinting, y’all).  I grew up on Doonesbury and Bloom County and had some Pogo on the side.  Now my husband is a very big Tom Tomorrow fan, and I can’t blame him for that.  Tom the Dancing Bug = *kisses fingertips to the air*.  So to find out that Tom Tomorrow has a picture book out ?  Could be terrible but with a Lemony Snicket quote I think it’s worth at least a glance.

  • Blueberry Girl didn’t seem to do too badly for the Gaiman man.  And as it was based on a poem it seemed logical to follow it up with a second poem, also turned into a picture book, also illustrated by Charles Vess.  So it is that Gaiman gives us a sneak peek at Instructions.

  • Oh, happy day!  My favorite let’s-talk-about-the-Newbery blog Heavy Medal has gunned the engine and is off and running.  Amongst some of their new posts, newbie blogger Jonathan Hunt (he of the Battle of the Kid’s Books fame) questions whether The Graveyard Book (speaking of Gaiman) is the child-favorite everyone assumed it would be.  Rev up your RSS feed and keep and eye on those folks.

  • A remarkably touching tribute to, amongst other things, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs over at Collecting Children’s Books today.  That man knows how to write ’em.

  • Ooo.  Purdy.  The new Cybils site is up and the nominations for 2009 will occur starting October 1st.  I’m ready.  I’m prepped.  I’m-ah gonna get to be the first person to nominate all my favorites this year, I can just feel it.  By the way, NYPL may have a little old event here in conjunction with the Cybils.  I don’t want to give away too much but it’s going to be a word that rhymes with "sauce ’em".

  • Maybe someday they’ll create the world’s most perfect e-reading device.  Until that time, Kindles continue look lamentable.  Aware of what happens when you lose your Kindle?  You don’t wanna know.

  • Rejoice ye shortened masses.  There’s a new Hobbit in town and he’s on the silver screen.  Thanks to Bookninja for the link.

  • So what have we learned here today?  Well, we have learned that author Zetta Elliott has a blog called Fledgling.  An interesting blog.  A blog that brings up points and topics we aren’t seeing anywhere else, as you will find in her Something like an open letter to the children’s publishing industry.  Sigh.  Just one MORE fabulous site to add to the old blogroll.  Thanks to Read Roger for the link.

  • Daily Image:

I am stealing this entry entirely from Kids Lit, because she did such a wonderful job with it.  I’m sorry Tasha, but you’re absolutely right.  These are too gorgeous to pass up.  Behold the new movie posters:

Gee.  Wonder why they didn’t call him "the author of The Witches" or "the author of Matilda" instead?  Oh.  Right.

Hmmm, I have my address (or at least my library’s, where I prefer to receive review copies) on my blog – but you have to read through my review policy to get to it.

Hmmm. Well, in that case I’ll just remove it like so. That’s the joy of blogging. Don’t like something? Out it goes.

I love Instructions. There is a video on YouTube where Gaiman recites it. He has the most expressive voice!

As possums are themselves awesome, I see no reason to correct you.
