2009 CHILDREN’S CHOICE BOOK AWARDS
VOTING SETS RECORDS


New York, New York –  Every Child a Reader announced today that voting has officially closed for the 2009 Children’s Choice Book Awards.  From March 16 to May 3, this year’s Awards garnered over 220,000 votes from kids across the country – more than quadruple the number of votes from last year’s Awards! Winners in all categories will be announced live on Tuesday, May 12th at the Children’s Choice Book Awards Gala during Children’s Book Week.  Read on for the many other official Book Week events taking place from coast to coast from May 11-17, 2009.

Children’s Book Week Headliner Event

WHAT: Children’s Choice Book Awards Gala Honoring Whoopi Goldberg

WHEN: Tuesday, May 12
 6 p.m.

WHO: Whoopi Goldberg, Impact Award Honoree
            Jon Scieszka, National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature

WHERE: Edison Ballroom

The second annual Children’s Choice Book Awards Gala will be celebrated this year at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan on Tuesday, May 12. The evening will award winners of this year’s Children’s Choice Book Awards – the only national kid-chosen book awards program – as well as an Impact Award presentation to Whoopi Goldberg for her literacy advocacy work. National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Jon Scieszka will be master of ceremonies.

Renowned storyteller Barbara Clark will perform a series of events in Chicago to celebrate Book Week and the 40th anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards.

National Ambassador Scieszka visits The Secret Garden Bookshop to celebrate Book Week on the evening of May 14.

 


 

WHAT: Children’s Book Week in Boston

WHEN: Saturday, May 16
                 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHO: Nine celebrated authors and illustrators

WHERE: Boston Public Library
                  700 Boylston Street, Copley Square, Boston

Free and open to the public.

In partnership with the Massachusetts Center for the Book and Boston Public Library, Children’s Book Week will officially conclude in Copley Square, Boston, at the main branch of the BPL on Saturday, May 16. Book Week activities will also be held in neighborhood branch locations on this day. Celebrate with beloved authors and illustrators: Paul Carrick, Kate Feiffer, Jarrett J. Krosoczka, Megan McDonald, Sara Pennypacker, Michael Rex, Greg Tang, Linda Urban, and Alan Witschonke. Join the fun from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. just outside the Rey Children’s Room on the main floor.




WHAT: Volunteer Afternoons at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York

WHEN: Throughout Children’s Book Week

WHO: The CBC’s Early Career Committee

The Early Career Committee will organize small groups of volunteers to read to children at the Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York throughout Book Week.

    Do you have any idea what the word “friggin'” means? I find it highly offensive and it is totally inappropriate especially when used in a text about Children’s Book Week (and children in general).
