You may have heard that my cool new children’s room is open. The one that they are calling The Children’s Center at 42nd Street. But did you hear about our opening festivities? Well, they’re two-part. In Part One we get live owls and Chris Raschka. In Part Two, you get to hear Laura Amy Schlitz do a little storytelling for free. Come celebrate the return of a circulating children’s library to The New York Public Library’s landmark Central Research Library on Fifth Avenue. Over the course of two days the Children’s Center at 42nd Street will offer engaging events for young people and their families – from performances to family theater, demonstrations to meet authors and illustrators. Topics range from music, science, and nature to art.

Friday, November 28
11:30 a.m. *Meet the Author and Illustrator: Chris Raschka Recommended for children ages 3 to 7. Chris Raschka will present his latest work, Peter and the Wolf, a retelling of Sergei Prokofiev’s classic tale, introducing children to the instruments of the orchestra. He will perform a reading of his new book, talk about his writing and demonstrate how he creates his illustrations. Mr. Raschka is the illustrator of over forty distinguished picture books, including the 2006 Caldecott Medal winner, The Hello, Goodbye Window. He is also the author and illustrator of Yo! Yes!, a Caldecott Honor Book .
1:30 p.m. *Performance: The Princess Who Escaped From Pirates. Recommended for ages 3 to 8.A princess received a golden ball for her birthday and accidentally dropped it in a pond…… Join in the theatrical adventure that includes princes, frogs and pirates, and teaches the virtue of courage and commitment. Presented by Talking Hands Theatre.
3:30pm *Performance: Pinkalicious The Musical Recommended for ages 4 to 8. Based on the book Pinkalicious by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann. A little girl can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Join us for a reading of the book and a performance of some of the songs from the show. Presented by the Vital Theatre Company. |

11:30 a.m. *Demonstration: Birds of Prey Recommended for all ages. Encounter hawks, owls, falcons or other species up close as we explore the adaptations of these winged wonders! Touch raptor artifacts. A lucky volunteer may get to help with some of the demonstrations. Presented by the New Canaan Nature Center.
1:30 p.m. *Performance: Polar Opposites Recommended for children ages 4 to 9. SCROLL TO KEEP READING THIS POST

Discover the similarities and differences of these polar regions through two participatory shows: “Polar Bear and the Beat” and “A Penguin State of Mind.” Presented by the Central Park Zoo Wildlife Theatre.
3:30 p.m. *Family Theater: The Mad Science Holiday Spectacular Recommended for children ages 4 to 12. You won’t believe your eyes! Is it magic or science? Presenters create a festival of lights and share top secret "special ice," shipped straight from the North Pole. It all comes together with magical no-melt snow. Presented by Mad Science of Manhattan and Westchester.

Friday, December 5, 4:00. “Into the Woods, Below the Lake, and Under the Hill: Children’s stories from the Netherlands, Scotland, and Tanzania.” Hear the renowned storyteller and reigning Newbery Medalist LAURA AMY SCHLITZ. Recommended for children ages 6 and up (but adults are welcome).
Saturday, December 6, 2:00. “Rhinos and Devils: Stories for Grown-ups and Wise Children.” Meet reigning Newbery Medalist LAURA AMY SCHLITZ, in an annual St. Nicholas Eve celebration of stories and storytelling. Recommended for adults, and for children 12 and up.
