Fusenews: Celebrity Smut Edition

September 8, 2008 by Betsy Bird   3 comments

  • Children’s literature awards you’ve never heard of but that exist: The Golden Duck Awards.  Do NOT tell me you’ve heard of this before.  Have you?  In case you’re like me and you’re under the vague impression that this might be a fake award with a jokey name, the Golden Duck Awards are given away each year to children’s books dealing with science fiction.  They’ve been around since at least 1992 and vary in quality.  I guess that with such a small pool to draw from you can’t be too choosy.  The current award winners are:

Picture Book:
Mars Needs Moms by Berkeley Breathed

Eleanor Cameron Award for Middle Grades:
Shanghaied to the Moon by Michael J. Daley
Gravity Buster: Journal #2 of a Cardboard Genius by Frank Asch

Hal Clement Award for Young Adult:

Sky Horizon by David Brin (author) and Scott Hampton (illustrator).

What?  No True Meaning of Smekday?  Much with oddness.  Thanks to John Peters for the link.

  • There’s a blog out there that goes by the name All Book Marketing.  It’s about puppies.  No, seriously, it’s about book marketing (surprise!) and Sara Dobie of Sylvan Dell Publishing has a piece up on Publicity for Your New Release.  You can never get too much marketing advice.

  • Actor Josh Hartnett reenacts a pivotal scene from the film Atonement.  And it’s not the jumping in the fountain scene.  Think… library.  Thanks to bookshelves of doom for the link.

There’s a very sweet post on the blog Potato Benevolence (great name, no?) about leading a friend’s son onto the path of Moomin madness.  There are also multiple adorable Moomin pictures to book.  Very cute.  Thanks to Children’s Illustration for the link.

  • Sherman Alexie, author, provides much needed sex advice at Savage Love.  You go wrap your little mind around that one and I’ll be over here trying to figure out how the heck I managed to link to Savage Love on a children’s literature blog. Thanks to Adam for the link.

  • You may have heard that VP hopeful Sara Palin did something or other with book banning or firing a librarian or something.  Unclear on the details?  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had a piece up this past Friday explaining everything. Thanks to Gregory K at Gotta Book for the link.

  • Daily Image:

As peculiar blog posts go, this one has to be the biggest doozy I’ve seen in a while.  It is a systematic pairing of Christian Bale and Kermit the Frog in similar positions.

There are TONS of them on the site.  Are those your brains on the floor?  Or did I just blow your mind?  Thanks to Living Between Wednesdays for the link.

It’s a bit odd, true. Perhaps if the award is better known they will get more submissions, yes?
