Needed: Suggestions of Mouse Related Graphic Novels
Oh, you beauties. You are my collective brain. The wisdom of the masses flows in your very veins. I am in a bit of a quandry and I wonder if you might be able to help me out. Here’s the deal: I want to come up with a list of mouse-related graphic novels. Preferably recent. Preferably good. Here’s what I have thus far:
- Mice Templar by Bryan JL Glass, art by Michael Avon Oeming
- Babymouse by Jennifer Holm, art by Matthew Holm
- Mouse Guard by David Petersen
- Redwall: The Graphic Novel by Brian Jacques, adapted by Stuart Moore, art by Bret Blevins
- Uh… Krazy Kat? I’m beginning to stretch here, aren’t I?
Any other suggestions come to mind? Besides Mickey, I mean. And Maus makes perfect sense but it’s a tad adult and I’m looking for middle grade titles. Thanks!

I thought of Kat & Mouse, but since there’s no actual rodents involved, I guess that’s not very helpful. Are mice and chipmunks genetically similar enough to include the Fog Mound series?
I’m not sure if this actually qualifies as a graphic novel (probably closer to your standard illustrated kid’s book), but Bernard of Scotland Yard was a favorite of mine, and had some pretty fantastic artwork.
Dunno if it will be good or not, but there will be a graphic adaptation of The Tale of Despereaux out in October.
Oh, and this might be a stretch, but aren’t there mice and rats in Coraline? I haven’t seen the new graphic novel yet, but I hear it’s good.
Oh, oh, and there’s a mouse in one of the stories in Flight Explorer (he’s also on the cover).
There was that one guy … hmmm … name was Mickey something?
Stuart Little? Was An American Tale a book first? I love that movie…btw, they lied. There ARE cats in America.
Benny and Penny in Just Pretend by Geoffrey Hayes…but it’s definitely not middle grade.
They’re picture books and not graphic novels, but the Graham Oakley Church Mouse books have a lot of panels and sequential art elements, if I remember correctly. And plenty of mice.
Don’t forget Quimby the Mouse! Chris Ware’s pre-Jimmy Corrigan mouse hero. Not for younger readers (no matter how charming he looks) but definitely a mouse, and definitely a graphic novel.
Isn’t there a mouse in Craig Thompson’s “Goodbye Chunky Rice?”
Okay, Quimby the Mouse is totally inappropriate, but what about Ricky Riccotta and His Giant Robot? Those books sure feel like graphic novels, even though they aren’t.
I second the motion on Oakley’s “Church Mouse” books, even if they aren’t technically graphic novels. Them books just need to be seen, period.
In the technically not-a-graphic-novel department, aren’t the Geronimo Stilton stories mousy? Too young?
I think it’s more of an illustrated middle grade novel, but The Mousehunter by Alex Milway comes to mind. It’s already been published in the UK, and I think it comes out in the US from Little, Brown later this year.
Maybe not what you’re looking for but Art Speigelman’s MAUS deserves a mention in any mouse-related graphic novel discussion.
