Kidlit Drink Night: Tippling in the Library

July 17, 2008 by Betsy Bird   5 comments

A call to arms!  A call to hanging out drinking ludicrously expensive mixed drinks!  It’s all part and parcel of the Kidlit Drink Nights here in NYC.  It’s not until July 29th, so cool your pretty little jets, but the place is quite fab.  Cheryl Klein and I were discussing where to hold the next one and the thought of The Library Hotel came to mind.  Surely some of you have heard of it before.  Here in New York there is a hotel that describes itself thusly:

"The Library Hotel in New York City is the first hotel ever to offer its guest over 6,000 volumes of books organized throughout the hotel by the Dewey Decimal System.* Each of the 10 guestroom floors honor one of the 10 categories of the DDC and each of the 60 rooms are uniquely adorned with a collection of books and art exploring a distinctive topic within the category it belongs to."

FYI, that little asterix connects with a link that ascertains that the Dewey Decimal System is the property of OCLC and is used with permission.  You might remember a couple years ago when OCLC sued the Library Hotel over their use of Dewey.  Could I make this stuff up?

And in that hotel (and in that hotel) there was a bar (there was a bar) the prettiest bar (the prettiest bar) that you ever did see (that you ever did see).  The bar in the hotel the hotel in New York, New York in New York, New York in the world and the green grass grew all around all around and the green grass grew all around.

So, here are the wheres, whens, and whats.  Each month (give or take) we have a Kidlit Drink Night here in New York and anyone who is interested can attend.  We get librarians, editors, authors, illustrators, teachers, and basically anyone interested in talking about children’s literature.  If you’re new, come on down!  We like new people.  Otherwise we just end up yammering over the same stuff over and over (example: If the librarians make up the majority there’s a lot of talk about storytimes…. which is awesome).

The bar is called Bookmarks and is located on the roof of the Library Hotel.  It is a bit of a pricier place than we’re used to.  It can also get busy so be warned.  We’re trying something new this month.  Fingers crossed on how it goes.

Here’s further info for you:

When:  Tuesday, July 29th

What Time:
6:30 p.m.

Where:
Bookmarks is located on top of The Library Hotel at 299 Madison Avenue (phone: 212-204-5498).  Just look for a bunch of people wearing glasses.  That’s how I tend to find my attendees anyway.
