Newbery/Caldecott Banquet ’08: Take a Turn on the Red Carpet/Bathmat
While at the Newbery/Caldecott Banquet I helped authors Jim Averbeck and Maria van Lieshout conduct red carpet interviews with many of the attendees. The results are now viewable at the site On the Red Carpet at ALA. There you can see interviews with everyone from John Green and Jon Scieszka to Roger Sutton, Linda Sue Park, and more. MORE! There’s even a blogger interview with Susan from Wizards Wireless and Jen Robinson of Jen Robinson’s Book Page.
And, of course, there was the obligatory Project Runway spoof:
Roger Sutton sorta scooped me on this, which is COMPLETELY unfair. I was sitting on this link for a week at least! Just waiting until the official go ahead to post. Ah well. I think Mr. Sutton may win 50 points for his use of the term "tramp stamp" anyway.

You may have been scooped Betsy, but it isn’t always the early bird who gets the worm. We’ve now added a poll to our blogsite, because what is “Project ALA” without a FAN FAVORITE. So for the next week folks can go to the blog and vote for their favorite literary celeb who appeared on the red carpet. Who will it be? Find out next week!
Ooo! That’s a hard one. Who to choose, who to choose . . . .
Wow Betsy! Now THAT was a hefty amount of video editing, not to mention the fact that you had to probably comb through hours of Project Runway footage. I applaud the work. (and my vote goes to Deborah Warren)
Full credit for video editing goes to Maria and Jim. They were the ones who had to go through TONS of footage (television and their own) to put it together. For free, no less. Me mind boggles.
OK, yes, I’m feeling a little bitter about this.
Linda Sue Park in Yoana Brashi…who saw that coming? Indeed, Laurie Halse Anderson does look absolutely fabulous, no arguments there. And no one rocks that “old school” look better than Roger Sutton.
Still..I can’t help but think that I’VE BEEN ROBBED.
Well there’s always next year. The call is in to Tom Ford.
Brian! You did very well. Remember that the final four are all headed for fashion success. In fact, I think I saw a copy of Daniel Vosovic’s guide to fashion at ALA.
Oh… and there’s always a chance to win “fan favorite.” Send your friends to the poll!
We’ve received our first hate mail! From a junior high teacher whose dictionary apparently doesn’t include the words “satire” or “parody.” Check it out under “comments” at the blog.
“Who are you wearing?”
Well, from the looks of my video, I’m wearing the expression of a deer caught in headlights. Erk. I was secretly hoping this footage had been lost. Special thanks to the girls at Archive Costumes. Free costumes are just one of the perks I get from being a part time set painter at my local community theatre.
Thanks for the interview!
You know, Jon Scieszka is older than me. I’m thinking of dyeing my hair.
Oooo I love the video! Jim and Maria and Betsy, you all look FIERCE. So clever. Super job. I thought the three of you were the cutest and suave-est.
Roger, if you had shown off your purple socks, you’d have been a shoe-in!
This video was hilarious. Thanks Betsy, Maria and Jim for this wonderful creation. And, Nathan, the costume comment was the funniest thing in the whole video because of how much the Project Runway judges are known for their distaste for anything costume-y. There’s no way that would have ended up on the cutting room floor. I also loved the Tim Gunn intervention.
