Newsy news! The kind like mama used to make. Oh, mama.

• First and foremost, the Cybils shortlists are in the process of being announced. For those of you unaware of what the Cybil Awards are, they are the first (and only) children’s/YA literary award judged,juried, and executionered (spell check didn’t like that last word one bit) by Kidlitosphere (spell check is threatening me with bodily harm now) bloggers. Right now we’re looking at the shortlists for Fantasy/Science Fiction, Fiction Picture Books, Middle Grade Novels, and Poetry. Then, on January 7th, we’ll see the results for Graphic Novels, Non-Fiction Picture Books, Non-Fiction MG/YA and Young Adult Novels.  I wish I’d kept track of what I nominated to see if any of my favorites made these lists.  I think I nominated The Chicken Chasing Queen of Lamar County and certainly I did Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! sometime as well.  Hard to keep track these days.

• Keeping things local, my NYPL peeps got podcasting crazy over at YALSA the other day.  Shout outs to librarians Rebecca Schosha and Sarah Couri who run the Children’s/YA Literary Cafe here at the Central Children’s Room.  ALSC is going to start regularly podcasting this year, it seems.  I need to get to work on my own next podcast soonish.  Howzabout I create a musical medley of potential Newbery winners?  Yeah… that’s the ticket…

• Old news (I haven’t had a chance to troll much since I got back from vacation) but good.  If you’ve ever wanted to walk into an author/illustrator’s home and sniff around their furniture then have I got a New York Times article for you.  Yes, it’s Hungry Caterpillar in the Florida Keys, which sounds more like a scientific report on a foreign species introduced into a natural wilderness than something you’d find in the Home & Garden section of the Times.  At any rate, this is your chance to look at where Eric Carle resides.  And thus the bar is slowly raised for all you other illustrators you there.  I wanna hear that you all have rugs based on the endpapers of your latest books.  Schnell, schnell!  Thanks to Children’s Illustration for the link.

• For Christmas my husband got me Season 3 of our favoritest Britcom produced in the last 10 years, Black Books.  It follows three socially inept crazies as they run a bookshop in England.  And in the second episode of Season 3 we saw two of them attempt to write a children’s book.  You subscribe to Netflix?  Do this thing for me.  Get Black Books, Season 3, and watch the second episode.  Mirth!  Sweet copious mirth!

• And, to end, BB-Blog always provides me with what I need.  This week, a newspaper piece on Paddington Bear and his immigration status.

Giving those Andre the Giant images a run for their money, I see.
