A Very Brief Smattering of News
- Some sad news today. Via CNN: Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has admitted that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease — but says he plans to continue writing his multi-million selling Discworld books . . . . "Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there’s time for at least a few more books yet." Pratchett adds that work is continuing on his next book "Nation" and that the "basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals." In a P.S. he adds that "I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as ‘I am not dead’. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. "I know it’s a very human thing to say ‘Is there anything I can do’, but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry."
- Husband o’ mine says to me the other day, "Does anyone print teen books that try to persuade them to vote for one candidate or another for president?" Huh. Nope, can’t say that anyone I know of does, but that’s a pretty interesting idea, isn’t it? I mean, candidates are always trying to lob themselves off on older voters. Seems pretty logical that they’d want to take advantage of the YA literary market and throw off a couple books here and there for politically savvy (and maybe not so savvy) 18-year-olds out there. We’re always hearing that the YA market has extended to college aged students. So why has no one started to look at this from a literary perspective? It’s an interesting idea.

What a real shame. But a good point made, he is not dead yet. Plus I know that the drugs for this get better every year. Let’s hope we get to read many more books from Terry!
