And the Award For Best Flap Copy Goes To . . .
Several months ago The Longstockings played around with the idea of creating The Flappies; an award that would go to the best written flap copy on a book. If they ever feel like doing so again, I’d like to nominate the flap for E. Lockhart’s upcoming novel The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. I’m going to copy it down here now. I don’t review YA normally, but this is making me think I might need an exception now and then. Here it is, word for word, and tell me it doesn’t make you want to read the book immediately:
Frankie Landau-Banks at age 14:
Debate Club.
Her father’s "Bunny Rabbit."
A mildly geeky girl attending a highly competitive boarding school.
Frankie Landau-Banks at age 15:
A knockout figure.
A sharp tongue.
A chip on her shoulder.
And a gorgeous new senior boyfriend: the supremely goofy, word-obsessed Matthew Livingston.
Frankie Landau-Banks.
No longer the kind of girl to take "no" for an answer.
Especially when "no" means she’s excluded from her boyfriend’s all-male secret society.
Not when her ex-boyfriend shows up in the strangest of places.
Not when she knows she’s smarter than any of them.
Not when she knows Matthew’s lying to her.
And when there are so many, many pranks to be done.
Frankie Landau-Banks at age 16:
Possibly a criminal mastermind.
This is the story of how she got that way.

What a hooker!!
Love it! We officially have our first nominee for the 2007 Flappie Awards…
Hooker, eh? In any case, YA is tempting but for my sanity’s sake I can’t touch it. In this business you have to concentrate your focus or else quit your job entirely to read all day. Tempting, but not really a possibility at the moment. I read a little YA but only if the flap is as good as this.
